If I could tell the old me of the life I have now, I wouldn't believe it. I'm happy, healthy, and fulfilled. I marvel in the present and look forward to the future. Now more than ever, I feel that I'm my "best self." Truthfully, it only took a few simple steps for me to reach this state of joy. In this post, I want to help you find (or continue to develop) the path to your best self.
start your journey of self discovery
The first step to becoming your best self is to truly find out who you are. I encourage you start your journey of self discovery. Who are you? What makes you feel alive? What passions do you want to share with the world? Whats your why? The answers may not come easily. I spent days reflecting on these questions, but once I knew the answers, I held them close to my heart.
If you need help forming or answering these questions, I suggest the following:
- Pray or practice your own form of spirituality.
- Journal the first things that come to mind. Carry a notepad around with you and jot down your thoughts and feelings. Write anything that pops up, no matter how insignificant it may seem. I bought my favorite journals are from ban.do.
- Listen to podcasts. This in itself will be part of another post, but I can't begin to explain how much podcasts have influenced my life recently. If you're new to them, start with Lewis Howes' School of Greatness. It's my favorite.
- Search and collect photos. If you are a visual person like myself, this is an easy way to help inspire and capture your true essence. Be in tune with why certain photos draw your attention versus others.
- COFFEE. I have my best ah-ha moments with coffee in hand!
embrace your uniqueness
Now that you know who you are, embrace it! Be true to yourself. Align your daily behaviors with the person you want to be. Don't worry about what others think or say. Set healthy boundaries with all the relationships you've formed, and understand it's ok to say no to honor your needs and values. Avoid comparing yourself to others, and follow your unique path.
follow your sixth sense
Have you ever heard or said the phrase, "I'm always right!" Well, in a way you are. You know what's right for you at all times. Or that other phrase, "follow your gut." It's true! I can remember countless times my inner self said, "proceed with caution" or "just go for it," and it was spot on. You have to trust yourself. I include this step because often times this is the hardest part for me. I've figured out who I am, I'm embracing my true self, but then I fail to use my discernment in difficult situations. The first two steps remain idle if you don't listen to yourself. Once you follow your sixth sense, you can proceed in life with courage, clarity, and self assurance.
create the life you deserve
Practice gratitude. Right where you are, give thanks. The best advice I can give you is to immediately transition your thoughts to be only positive. I truly believe that when you have a positive mindset, the universe is in your favor. Surround yourself with encouraging people and practice good habits. I will go further into detail what my habits consist of (and why they're important) in a later post, but for now, try starting with just one or two healthy habits that you can practice daily. Often times, one "keystone habit" can have a trickle-down effect and ultimately change your entire life.
We attract what we release into the world. If you want to create the life you deserve, then give back what you want in return.
love yourself unconditionally
LOVE YOURSELF. Know that you are beautifully and wonderfully made. I am reminded to love myself as I love my daughter Aubrey. I treat her with kindness. I physically take care of her and maintain her health. I bring her joy at any moment possible, and I embrace her uniqueness. I love her unconditionally and wholeheartedly. Do the same for yourself. Practice self affirmation and self talk. To help others, you must first help yourself. Love the "self" you've created.
